Competition Description

Nuamos Cup is a brew competition held in throwdown format – a single-elimination format where competitors face off round by round. The competition takes place as part of The Coffee Village Festival, at Parc Iulius, Cluj-Napoca.

The purpose of the competition is to identify the coffee enthusiast – whether a professional barista or not – who understands coffee best and can deliver the best possible cup. The competition is open to anyone who loves coffee and wants to showcase their skills in front of a sensory panel of judges.

Art. 4

Eligibility

Anyone who meets the following requirements may participate:

  • Be of legal age (18 years old by the date of the competition)
  • Have paid the participation fee of 59 RON + VAT
  • Have completed and signed the registration form
  • Accept these rules and regulations in full

There are no restrictions on nationality, professional level, or prior competition experience. The competition is open to both amateurs and industry professionals.

Art. 5

Registration and Participation Fee

The maximum number of participants is 64 competitors.

Participation fee: 59 RON + VAT / person

Registration deadline: August 5, 2026, subject to availability.

Registration is processed in the order in which the participation fee is paid, on a first-come, first-served basis. The organizer reserves the right to close registrations once the maximum number of participants is reached, even before the deadline.

Payment of the participation fee is made via bank transfer. Bank account details are sent to participants after their registration is confirmed. Registration becomes valid once the payment is confirmed by the organizer.

The participation fee is non-refundable in case of voluntary withdrawal by the competitor.

Art. 6

Competition Format (Throwdown)

The competition is held in a single-elimination (throwdown) format, according to the following rules:

  • 64 competitors take part in the first round.
  • In each round, the judges select a single winning cup. The competitor whose cup is not selected is eliminated.
  • The competition continues until a single competitor remains, who is declared the winner.
  • A new coffee is used for each new round.

Structure of each round:

  • 10 minutes – practice session (familiarization with the equipment and the coffee for that round)
  • 5 minutes – actual competition time (brewing and serving the cup to the judges)

No speech required.

Art. 7

Coffee, Equipment and Brewing Rules

The coffee used in all rounds is supplied exclusively by the organizer, Nuamos Green Coffee SRL.

Details about the coffee's origin, roast profile, or any other information about the coffee used will not be disclosed to competitors before or during the competition.

Each participant receives 50 grams of coffee per round.

Equipment provided by the organizer:

  • One grinder (available in the preparation area)
  • Competitors may bring their own grinders.

Competitors' own equipment:

Participants must bring all the brewing equipment they need. Any manual brewing equipment is permitted (V60, Chemex, Aeropress, Kalita, French Press, ibrik, etc.).

  • Competitors may use their own water.
  • Any personal manual filtering and brewing equipment is permitted.

Mandatory brewing rules:

  • The coffee served to the judges must be obtained exclusively using manual brewing methods.
  • Minimum serving size for the judges: 150 ml of coffee per cup.
  • Adding any substance to the coffee recipe is strictly prohibited (sugar, milk, flavorings, additives, etc.). The cup served must contain only coffee and water.
  • Recipes and brewing techniques are entirely up to the competitor.

The organizer provides access to drinking water in the competition area. Competitors who wish to use their own water (filtered, mineral, etc.) must bring it themselves.

Art. 8

Judging Panel

Judging is carried out by a panel of 3 sensory judges.

The judging process follows these principles:

  • Judges evaluate the cups blind – without knowing the identity of the competitor who prepared the coffee.
  • The winning cup is selected live, in front of the audience.
  • At the end of each round, the judges will publicly indicate the cup they consider the winner.
  • The judges' decision is final and cannot be appealed.

Evaluation criteria may include, but are not limited to: balance, clarity, sweetness, aromatic complexity, and texture.

Cash prizes will be paid within 30 calendar days from the date of the competition. The organizer reserves the right to award additional prizes (trophies, certificates, sponsor products), subject to availability.

Art. 10

Conduct and Fair Play

All participants must comply with the following rules of conduct:

  • Treat other competitors, judges, organizers, and the audience with respect.
  • Do not communicate with the judges before or during the evaluation.
  • Do not leave the competition area during their own round without the organizer's consent.
  • Do not use any substances or techniques not authorized by the organizer.
  • Accept the judges' decision without dispute.

Violating the rules of conduct may result in disqualification, without any right to a refund of the participation fee.

Art. 11

Image Rights and GDPR

By registering for the competition, the participant agrees to:

  • Be photographed and filmed during the event for promotional purposes.
  • Have such images and videos published on the organizer's communication channels (social media, website, press materials).

Personal data collected during registration is processed in accordance with Regulation (EU) 2016/679 (GDPR). The organizer will not share personal data with third parties without the participant's explicit consent.

Art. 12

Force Majeure and Changes

The organizer reserves the right to modify the competition schedule, these rules, or to cancel the event in cases of force majeure (extreme weather conditions, administrative restrictions, or other circumstances beyond the organizer's control).

If the event is cancelled due to force majeure, the participation fee will be fully refunded.
